InstaDetox

Make social media boring, instead of blocking it.

InstaDetox takes the colour out of the apps you choose and puts a short pause in front of opening them. Both lower the pull that turns a quick glance into half an hour. No lock screen, no nagging, just the moment where a reflex becomes a conscious decision again.

The problem

Instagram, TikTok and the rest are built for constant reward: strong colours, endless movement, a feed that never stops. That pulls, and "just a quick look" turns into doomscrolling, often without you noticing. Classic app blockers answer with a lock, and locks breed defiance: you work around them, switch them off, or resent being patronised.

Reduce the pull, don't block

InstaDetox goes the other way. Instead of blocking an app, it makes it less rewarding, through two small frictions (design friction) that interrupt the dopamine loop without forbidding you anything:

Unlike a plain social media block, you can still open any app. You just notice that you are doing it. And unlike Android's system-wide grayscale setting, InstaDetox works per app: your maps, photo or camera app stays in colour, and only the time-sinks you selected turn grey.

What InstaDetox does

Grayscale (system)

As soon as a selected app is in the foreground, the whole screen turns to real grayscale. Red, blue and green genuinely disappear. The image stays bright and readable but loses its pull. Colour returns the moment you leave the app.

Grayscale (overlay)

A grey veil over the selected app. A little weaker than the system filter, but it needs no extra setup and works on any device right away. You set the strength as a percentage.

Breathing pause

Before a selected app opens, a short breathing moment appears with a clear question: really open it or cancel? A few seconds that are often enough to interrupt the automatic reach for the feed.

The pause is fully configurable: length and pace of the breathing exercise, "open muted" against videos that blare instantly, and an adjustable grace period and re-prompt interval, so you don't have to breathe again on every quick app switch, or exactly do, if you want to decide every return consciously.

Choose any apps

You decide which apps are watched. A few obvious ones are pre-selected; everything else you tick on and off, saved instantly.

Colour time & cheat button

Sometimes you really need an app in colour: to look at a photo, sell something, check a video. For that there is a daily limit of colour screen time that you set yourself. A small button at the edge of the screen (the "cheat button") gives you colour back in one-minute steps, never beyond your daily budget.

Your stats

InstaDetox shows how often you meant to open a watched app, how often you decided against it, and roughly how much time you gained. Everything is computed and stored on the device. Nothing leaves your phone.

What it costs

Free forever are the overlay grayscale filter and the full stats. You do not need a subscription to use the app.

The subscription adds the two most effective functions: the system-wide grayscale filter and the breathing pause. You can try each of them free for 14 days, with no payment details and no subscription trap. The 14 days start only once you actually use the function for the first time. The regular price is EUR 9.99 per year, EUR 4.99 in the first year. What always applies is the price shown to you in the Google Play purchase dialogue before you confirm. It can vary by country and tax.

Why a price at all? A reliable app with real customer support, ongoing maintenance and full legal compliance is work, which we cover with a small yearly fee. Measured against the life time and calm you can win back, that is a fair trade. In return you get an app built to high data-protection standards: no tracking, no ads, your data stays on your device. What matters most to us is honesty towards the people who use it, and their satisfaction.

What the research shows

The two core ideas, take the colour away and put a moment in front, are not our invention; they have been studied independently. The numbers belong to the respective studies, not to our product; we promise no particular result for you.

Short interruption with an offered cancel option before opening an app 36% of opening attempts aborted, 37% fewer attempts

For scale: over a year, the 28 to 38 minutes a day measured in these studies would add up to roughly 170 to 230 hours. That is life time that is better spent elsewhere. And the 36% of aborted openings show that often only the short moment is missing to interrupt a habit.

More studies support the picture. In a randomised field experiment, the "design friction" of grayscale mode led to an immediate, significant drop in measured screen time, more clearly than mere goal-setting (Zimmermann & Sobolev, 2023, Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking; DOI: 10.1089/cyber.2022.0027). Another experimental study found grayscale mode especially effective for habitual use (Wickord & Quaiser-Pohl, 2023, Computers in Human Behavior Reports; DOI: 10.1016/j.chbr.2023.100294).

Honest limits

InstaDetox is Android only (version 8.0 and up).

The strongest mode, the system-wide grayscale filter, changes a protected system setting and therefore needs a one-time setup. From Android 11 this is guided directly on the phone; on Android 8 to 10 it needs a computer once. The Help & FAQ explains it step by step, and the setup video shows the whole thing.

Why we build this

InstaDetox grew out of a problem of our own. We too, grown adults in the middle of life, noticed how hard it is to keep our own social media use and daily screen time in check. That is no accident: billion-dollar platforms earn money from us staying as long as possible. Their algorithms are designed to maximise our screen time. They turn our life time into their business. We are deeply unhappy with that.

We care about the opposite: more quality time and more attention for what really counts: family, friends, nature, culture and life itself. And less time on reels you'll only remember a fraction of anyway.

At first InstaDetox was just a small DIY project on our own phones, a tool to reach exactly that. Because it helped us, we wanted to let more people share in it. Because life is too short to spend it on social media.

More about who is behind this, and what we earn from, is on the page About us. The full company details are in the Imprint, and how we handle your data is in the Privacy policy.
